Lorcana vs. The World - Why Disney's TCG is Growing Faster Than Predicted

In late 2023 when Disney Lorcana launched, industry watchers in significant numbers believed it would be a niche collectible – popular, perhaps, but it would not be up to challenging the likes of Magic: The Gathering or Pokémon. However just a few short months later, Lorcana was not just competing against the biggest trading card games in the world, it was outselling them in key markets and helping to expand the overall audience of TCG’s at a pace that simply couldn’t have been predicted. According to Ravensburger, the runaway success of Lorcana has increased the number of TCG players in total rather than pulling players away from other games.

Why is it so popular?

A major factor in its popularity is, of course, the strength of the Disney brand. Lorcana utilises almost a century of beloved characters from The Lion King to Frozen to Aladdin, resulting in a ready-made audience that spans generations. It is this nostalgic appeal that has attracted not only traditional TCG players but also Disney fans who may otherwise never have considered trading card games. This type of cross-fandom is something no other TCG has been able to replicate at the same scale.

However, brand power alone does not explain the explosive growth Lorcana has experienced. The game has been designed to be intentionally accessible; it strikes a good balance between strategic depth and ease of entry. Unlike some of the more long-running TCGs that newcomers can find intimidating, Lorcana’s rules are streamlined whilst not sacrificing any of the important tactical nuance. This accessibility is something that has been repeatedly highlighted as a key factor in its popularity, this helps it appeal to families, casual players, and even competitive gamers.

Everybody loves Lorcana

Ravensburger's financial performance in 2025 was significantly boosted by the continued success of Lorcana but another reason for the rapid rise of Lorcana is its evolving ecosystem. Organised play, reprints, and new formats have all been rolled out, and the leadership at Ravensburger have expressed confidence that the momentum will continue into the near future. The secondary market has continued to thrive as a result of the introduction of later sets which have helped to energise collectors.

Ultimately the growth of Lorcana is the result of a rare mix. A globally beloved brand, a welcoming gameplay experience, strong competitive support, and a collector environment that is not overwhelming. This is not just another TCG but a cultural crossover event. If the current trajectory remains strong then Lorcana could one day take its place alongside the biggest TCGs in the world.
