In what is a landmark "Universes Beyond" collaboration, Magic: The Gathering created a partnership with one of the most popular video game franchises of all time: Final Fantasy. Following its release on June 13, 2025, this new set brought together the iconic characters, epic stories and legendary summons from all sixteen of the main-line Final Fantasy games into the universe of Magic. This set is not just a simple collaboration, but rather a tribute to the franchise - complete with new processes and incredible card treatments that capture the theme that makes Final Fantasy particularly special.
Lore and Collectability
The set makes short work of translating the sprawling lore of Final Fantasy into the Magic format. It offers iconic heroes and villains such as Cloud, Midgar Mercenary, Sephiroth and Fabled Soldier, each featuring stunning artwork. Collectors can seek out the eye-catching “Borderless Surreal Space” card treatments and the exclusive “Singularity foil” versions, which are certain to become sought-after collector’s items.
The set also contains a special bonus showcasing 64 legendary creatures with new artwork, that celebrates artists from both franchises.
Key Mechanics of the Set
Job Select
This is a new triggered ability that appears on some of the Equipment cards. When any Equipment that has Job Select arrives on the battlefield, a 1/1 colourless “Hero” creature token is created, and then Equipment is attached to it. This new mechanic represents the class system of the Final Fantasy games elegantly, permitting you to immediately give a character a job such as "Warrior" or "White Mage." It's a powerful way in which you can get a creature on the board and also equip it in just one play.
Tiered
Taking inspiration from the tiered magic spells that are found in the video games (e.g., Fire, Fira, Firaga), this mechanic gives you the option to pay additional mana and power up a spell. A single card that has Tiered can possess multiple modes; each mode is more powerful the more mana you pay. The result is a single spell that serves as a flexible tool for a number of situations.
Saga Creatures
This is a fantastic combination of two existing card types. Saga creatures are creatures that can both attack and block, and also those that have chapter abilities. When you solve the last chapter, the card is given up. This mechanic captures perfectly the soul of a Final Fantasy Summon: a temporary and powerful ally that comes onto the battlefield and uses an ability that overwhelms opponents.
Returning Mechanics
The set has also seen the return of several beloved mechanics that fit seamlessly into the Final Fantasy theme.
Adventures
The Adventure mechanic has returned, this time on a cycle of rare lands or "Towns." This makes it possible to cast either a powerful sorcery or instant and then proceed to play a land from exile, all of this can be completed on a single card.
Landfall
This is a firm fan-favourite mechanic and is triggered whenever a land enters the battlefield. It is an important feature in the green-red colour pair of the set and represents both the exploration and discovery of all new locations.
Transforming Double-Faced Cards
These cards have made a return to represent key characters, plot points and transformations for example, Clive changing into Ifrit.
