Magic: The Gathering – Secrets of Strixhaven

One of the most anticipated story arcs of recent years is Magic: The Gathering’s return to Arcavios. Strixhaven, the Multiverse’s premier university of magic, is a place where academic rivalry, ancient secrets and dangerous magic collide. With Secrets of Strixhaven, Wizards of the Coast has the opportunity to revisit the plane and take a look at the deeper, darker mystery that is unfolding underneath the campus quads and lecture halls.

The story so far: secrets beneath the university

With the last major Strixhaven storyline the school was left reeling following two catastrophic events. The first of these took place in Strixhaven: School of Mages, when the Oriq cult, led by the vengeful Extus Narr, made an attempt to summon the Blood Avatar, an event which unleashed chaos across campus. The students and faculty only just survived this assault, and the foundations of the university were shaken.

During March of the Machine, Strixhaven became a battleground again. “Arcavios: A Radiant Heart,” was a side story where a group of students attempted to recast the Invocation of the Founders, an ancient spell used by the Elder Dragons to create the university. Their goal was to deter the Phyrexian invasion, however the spell was disrupted when the spark of Quintorius Kand ignited midcasting. This resulted in a second magical upheaval that made the school vulnerable - and its future uncertain.

In Secrets of Strixhaven, the university is still recovering. Strange magical disturbances are echoing through the colleges and forgotten histories are resurfacing. Whispers indicate that something that has long been buried beneath the campus is starting to stir.

The new storyline introduces players to a fresh cohort of Strixhaven students, with some familiar faces, and some new ones, who are drawn into a mystery that spans both the school’s past and present. Early episodes of the story hint at themes of communication, identity and the bonds formed between students during field studies. These personal narratives are intertwined in the larger magical threat looming over Arcavios.

What we know about the new set

The set officially releases on 24th April 2026, but pre-release events will run from 17th - 23rd April, and will be the first opportunity for players to get their hands on the cards. So far Wizards of the Coast have confirmed:

1. Return to Strixhaven’s five colleges
Returning are Lorehold, Prismari, Quandrix, Silverquill and Witherbloom. There is a Commander Deck for each, led by a student who has now risen to leadership.

2. The mystical archive returns
The bonus sheet from the original Strixhaven set is returning. It features powerful spells with unique English and Japanese frame variants.

3. Off-campus adventures
This set explores life outside the university walls, with new locations, new magical phenomena and new threats all tied to the forgotten past of Arcavios.

4. A New Strixhaven novel
Strixhaven: Omens of Chaos by Seanan McGuire will be released alongside the set. It expands the story and includes a retroframe Command Tower promo.

Looking ahead

Secrets of Strixhaven with its blend of academic intrigue, magical archaeology and storytelling, promises to be one of the standout MTG releases of 2026. With pre-release weekend quickly approaching, players should expect more story reveals, card previews and a deeper look into the mysteries that wait beneath the university.
