Released in August 2025, Magic: The Gathering’s Edge of Eternities set provides players with a journey to a new plane that is quite simply unforgettable. The set, which offers a bold new direction for the game, blends an epic space-opera theme with high fantasy. With innovative mechanics and stunning artwork Edge of Eternities is already making a strong impression on the game.
The Lore and World-Building of Sothera
A hub of cosmic conflict, the Sothera system is home to three main factions. Here you will find the Blue/White intellectual and bureaucratic Stargazers, the Black/Red powerful and ruthless Voidforged and the Green adaptable and nature-loving Verdant Conclave.
Each of these factions has its own unique and very distinct playstyle and identity. The narrative of each faction's struggle is also woven directly into the cards. The aesthetic of the set is expressed through its stunning “Borderless Surreal Space” card treatments, which depict the beautiful, vast and terrifying cosmos. Along with the “Singularity foil” cards, these treatments add what is undeniably a new level of collectability to the entire set.
Key Mechanics of the Set
If you’re thinking of investing in Edge of Eternities (and in our expert opinion it’s a good investment to make!), then there are some things you’ll need to consider. Let’s start with the key mechanics of the set, to see if it fits your playstyle.
Spacecraft
As a new subtype of Artifact, this is representative of the vehicles that the factions use. Often having powerful abilities, they can be crewed by other creatures and this in turn can lead to them becoming creatures themselves. This offers players a unique way in which they can gain a distinct advantage.
Warp
As an ability word that appears on spells, warp gives players the ability to pay a different, and often cheaper, cost to cast a spell, and at a different speed, for example as an instant, or even with a different effect. This ability helps allow for surprise plays and also add a layer of tactical flexibility.
Void
This is a new keyword ability which creates a “Void” token. Players use the token to pay for different spells that have the “Void” ability or that can be sacrificed for a number of effects. This provides them with a unique challenge with regard to resource management.
Most Impactful Cards from Edge of Eternities
As well as looking at the mechanics of the set, our resident MTG expert Alex set out a few standout cards you’ll be sure to want to use.
The cornerstone of the Void mechanic and a legendary creature to boot, Sothera has the ability to generate Void tokens before using them to powerful effect - making them a dominant force when it comes to Commander. They are also a key piece in many Constructed decks. The artwork on this card is simply breath-taking and captures the cosmic horror of the Supervoid.
A good choice for influence in Standard and Pauper format - in the right decks – because of lower competition for discard spells. It can act as a one mana spell without any downside potentially leading to some interesting combat dynamics.
If spectacular artwork (by Quintin Gleim) is what you’re after then Galactic Wayfarer won’t disappoint with its amazing visual storytelling. Pretty great just to own considering it’s rarity is common. Check out Quintin Gleim’s Monoist Circuit-Feeder or Mutinous Massacre for more…
